The Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca 2018 is a distinguished expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Piedmont. Sourced exclusively from the Marenca vineyard, one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most celebrated crus, this wine reflects both meticulous tradition and unique terroir. After a careful hand-harvest, the grapes undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks followed by extended maceration to fully extract structure and aromatics. The ageing process typically involves large Slavonian and French oak barrels for at least two years, contributing to the wine’s complexity, finesse, and the typical Barolo structure. The 2018 vintage stands out for its elegance, showing an intense garnet colour and a nose that weaves together cherries, plums, violets, tobacco, tar, and earthy undertones, with subtle hints of liquorice and balsamic.
Barolo hails from the heart of the Langhe hills in north-western Italy, a region renowned for producing some of the world’s finest and longest-lived red wines. The unique marl and limestone soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature shifts, favour the slow, complete ripening of Nebbiolo grapes, leading to wines of singular aromatic profundity and commanding tannic structure. The area has a proud history dating back centuries, and Barolo has often been called “the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings”. The vineyards, many of them perched on rolling hills with optimal sun exposure, allow producers like Luigi Pira to craft powerful, age-worthy wines.
Given its robust character and depth, this Barolo Marenca pairs exceptionally with richly flavoured dishes. Classic Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), porcini risotto, wild game, or slow-cooked veal shank (ossobuco) will harmonise beautifully with the wine’s savoury complexity and palate-cleansing tannins. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Castelmagno also make for superb accompaniments.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least two hours to allow its full aromatic range to unfurl. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C in large, tulip-shaped glasses to enhance its bouquet and texture. If cellared well, this 2018 Barolo Marenca will reward further patience, developing greater nuance over the next decade.
