Mauro Veglio’s Barolo 2020 comes from one of Italy’s most revered wine regions, made exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape variety. Barolo, often referred to as the “King of Wines,” is renowned for its complexity and ageing potential. The 2020 vintage was characterised by a balanced growing season, allowing Nebbiolo to reach ideal ripeness. In traditional fashion, the wine is fermented and then aged for several years in large oak casks, imparting structure and subtle tertiary notes while preserving the grape’s aromatic precision. Expect an expressive nose of rose petals, sour cherry, dried herbs, and a hint of tar, leading to a palate with firm but refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and flavours of red fruit, leather, and earthy undertones.
Barolo DOC is nestled in the heart of the Langhe, an area in southern Piemonte famed for its rolling hills and patchwork vineyards. The region benefits from a continental climate, with warm summers and cool autumns ideal for rewarding Nebbiolo with extended hang time on the vines. The local “terre bianche,” composed of calcareous marl, provides an excellent balance of drainage and mineral content, contributing to wines of extraordinary longevity and aromatic complexity. The history of Barolo dates back to the 19th century, and it has firmly established itself as a symbol of Italian enological excellence.
This Barolo is best enjoyed alongside richly flavoured dishes. Classic Piedmontese pairings include brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin pasta with white truffle, or a hearty mushroom risotto. The wine’s structure also matches beautifully with aged cheeses like Castelmagno or mature Parmigiano Reggiano. For a more international pairing, consider roast lamb with rosemary or game meats, which will complement the Nebbiolo’s character beautifully.
For optimal enjoyment, decant Mauro Veglio Barolo 2020 at least an hour before serving to allow its aromas to unfold. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C, which will showcase its aromatic depth and texture. This wine will reward both immediate enjoyment and further cellaring over the next decade.
