Luigi Pira’s Barolo Marenca 2015 is a superb representation of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most esteemed crus. This single-vineyard wine is crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Marenca vineyard, a site revered for its optimal exposure and unique soils. The 2015 vintage benefitted from a warm growing season, resulting in ripe tannins and a full-bodied structure while maintaining elegant aromatics typical of great Barolo. Vinification adheres to traditional methods, with long maceration and careful aging in large oak casks, allowing the pure expression of fruit—notes of cherries, dried roses, and anise—to shine alongside subtle hints of tar and truffle.
Barolo hails from the Langhe hills in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, an area shaped by centuries of viticultural heritage. The climate here is continental, marked by cold winters, hot summers, and frequent autumn mists that help Nebbiolo ripen slowly, developing complexity and signature aromas. The soils are primarily calcareous marl, lending Barolo its firm structure and age-worthiness. Historically, Barolo has been lauded as the “King of Wines” since the 19th century, enjoying a reputation for depth, elegance, and remarkable longevity.
This Barolo’s structure and aromatic intensity call for rich, savoury dishes. Classic pairings include Piedmontese specialities such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), agnolotti del plin (meat-filled pasta), or tajarin with white truffle. More universally, it brings out the best in roast lamb, wild mushroom risotto, mature cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, and game birds such as pheasant or quail. The wine’s lively acidity and refined tannins will complement fatty cuts and earthy sauces beautifully.
For the fullest enjoyment, decant the wine at least one hour before serving to allow its bouquet to unfurl. Serve at a temperature of 18-20°C. This 2015 Barolo Marenca can be cellared for another decade or more, but its texture and aromatic complexity already promise a memorable experience.
