Viniou Reviews

Cerreto’s 2010 Barolo DOC, Cuvée Brunate, is a remarkable expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape that defines this historic denomination. The 2010 vintage was marked by an ideal growing season, resulting in wines with both structure and elegance. In the glass, you can expect a complex bouquet of dried rose, cherry, tar, wild herbs and subtle hints of liquorice and tobacco, typical of the Brunate vineyard—one of Barolo’s most esteemed crus. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with assertive yet refined tannins, a vibrant freshness, and lingering notes of red fruit mingling with balsamic and earthy undertones. Traditional vinification processes heighten the Nebbiolo’s purity; long maceration and extended ageing in large oak casks allow for graceful development without masking the wine’s terroir.

Barolo hails from the heart of the Langhe in Piedmont, a region noted for its rolling hills cloaked in morning mists and unique marl and limestone soils rich in clay and sand. This terroir imparts complexity and an unmistakable finesse to the wines. The area’s continental climate—cold winters and hot summers moderated by Alpine breezes—creates ideal conditions for Nebbiolo to achieve full ripeness while retaining intense aromas and freshness. With winemaking traditions dating back centuries, Barolo has rightly earned its reputation as the “King of Wines and Wine of Kings.”

Given the wine’s power and complexity, pair it with rich, flavourful dishes such as braised beef cheek in Barolo, wild boar ragu, or slow-cooked lamb shanks. Local Piedmontese specialities, such as tajarin pasta with truffles or agnolotti del plin, also make for classic and rewarding partners. For a cheese accompaniment, opt for mature Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.

To fully appreciate this 2010 Barolo, decant for at least an hour before serving. Pour at 17-18°C to allow its layered aromatics and textured palate to unfold beautifully in the glass. This wine is now entering its prime and will continue to evolve gracefully for several years.
