Viniou Reviews

Bel Colle’s Barolo DOC Riserva 10 Anni 2014 is a stunning expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape that defines the Barolo appellation. This Riserva, matured an impressive ten years before release, showcases the full spectrum of Nebbiolo’s complexity. The 2014 vintage is marked by its elegance and finesse, with the extended ageing imbuing the wine with soft, resolved tannins and a profound depth of flavour. In the glass, expect an inviting garnet hue with delicate aromas of dried roses, tar, truffle, and red cherry, underpinned by subtle earthy notes and hints of leather and tobacco—the hallmarks of a mature Barolo.

Barolo sits in the heart of Italy’s Piedmont region, a hilly landscape famous for its rolling hills and famed fogs. The region benefits from a continental climate, with warm days and cool nights that encourage Nebbiolo’s slow ripening and remarkable aromatic development. Soils here, primarily composed of calcareous marl, contribute structure, elegance, and pronounced minerality to the wines. Historically, Barolo has been known as “the king of wines and the wine of kings,” a testament to its stature since the 19th century, with tradition and quality fiercely defended by local producers.

For food pairing, this mature Riserva is the ideal partner for richly flavoured dishes. Classic Piedmontese pairings include brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), agnolotti del plin (local stuffed pasta), and tajarin with white truffle when in season. Elsewhere, savour it with roast lamb, wild mushroom risotto, or mature cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and pecorino.

To fully appreciate Bel Colle’s Barolo Riserva 2014, decant the wine for at least an hour to let its intricate bouquet unfurl. Serve at 17-18°C, in large glasses that allow ample aeration. This wine is at a beautiful stage for drinking now, but can also reward further cellaring over the coming years.
