Viniou Reviews

Massolino’s Barolo Parussi 2017 is an exceptional expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape of the Piedmont region. Crafted from vineyards situated in the esteemed Parussi cru within Castiglione Falletto, this cuvée encapsulates both the power and elegance characteristic of top Barolo wines. The 2017 vintage experienced a warm growing season, resulting in ripe tannins and concentrated flavours, yet careful vinification by Massolino has preserved fresh acidity and aromatic purity. Maturation in traditional large Slavonian oak casks allows the complexity of the Nebbiolo to shine, revealing notes of wild cherry, rose petal, hints of tar and leather, and a lingering mineral finish.

Barolo is nicknamed “the King of Wines” and hails from the heart of the Langhe in north-west Italy, where rolling hills and ancient soils of clay, limestone, and marl create a unique terroir. The region benefits from a continental climate, with marked differences between day and night temperatures, which helps to develop the signature aromatic intensity and fine tannic structure. With its centuries-old history, Barolo has set the standard for Italian fine wines, combining tradition, innovation, and an innate sense of place.

Pairing-wise, Massolino Barolo Parussi 2017 demands robust and flavourful dishes. The wine will elevate braised beef cheek, truffle-infused risotto, or osso buco, while classic Piedmontese specialties such as tajarin pasta with a rich ragù or wild mushroom dishes bring out the earthy undertones of the Nebbiolo. For cheese pairings, opt for mature Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Tome.

To fully appreciate this Barolo, allow the wine to breathe for at least an hour before serving, decant if possible. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C to let the aromatic bouquet and textural finesse express themselves. While already approachable, this wine will reward those with the patience to cellar it for several more years, gaining further nuance and harmony with age.
