Viniou Reviews

The 2014 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti from Roagna is a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo, hailing from one of the most esteemed crus in the Barbaresco DOC. Sourced from exceptionally old vines ("Vecchie Viti") in the fabled Asili vineyard, this wine typifies the elegance, complexity, and longevity associated with great Piedmontese reds. 2014 was a challenging vintage across Piedmont, resulting in lower yields but commendable finesse and aromatic purity. Roagna’s traditional vinification—long macerations, minimal intervention, and ageing in large old oak casks—ensures a wine of remarkable structure and nuance. Expect a mesmerising bouquet of rose petals, wild strawberries, truffle, and hints of anise, all underpinned by precise minerality and refined tannins.

The Barbaresco region, located in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, benefits from a unique interplay between the Tanaro river, rolling slopes, and a patchwork of clay-limestone soils. The microclimate here is more temperate compared to its neighbour Barolo, often favouring quicker ripening and earlier elegance in Nebbiolo, while sites like Asili are renowned for their exceptional balance and aromatic depth. Piedmont itself is steeped in viticultural history, with Nebbiolo documented here for centuries and Barbaresco gaining international recognition since the late 19th century.

This wine is a sublime partner for Piedmontese cuisine. Indulge in classic pairings such as tajarin with white truffle, brasato al Barolo (slow-braised beef), or delicate roasted lamb. The wine’s tension and freshness also make it a superb match for mushroom risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, or dishes featuring earthy autumn vegetables. For an adventurous pairing, try with game birds like pigeon or guinea fowl, which will complement the wine's aromatic complexity.

Decanting for an hour before serving is advisable to let the aromas fully unfold. The ideal serving temperature is 16-18°C, which will help highlight the wine’s delicate floral notes and allow its tannic structure to soften, providing a harmonious and gracefully persistent tasting experience.
