Roagna’s Crichet Pajé 2013 is a truly exceptional Barbaresco, crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyard site, Pajé, is one of the most esteemed crus of Barbaresco, and the “Crichet” portion refers to a select upper parcel known for optimal exposure and old vines. 2013 is regarded as a prodigious vintage in the region, with a cool growing season imparting structure and finesse. Roagna is famed for its traditional winemaking: rigorous selection of fruit, prolonged maceration, and extensive cask ageing bestow remarkable depth and longevity upon the wine. In the glass, you can expect an expressive bouquet of wild cherry, dried rose, tobacco leaf, and subtle truffle, underpinned by a mineral thread and finely woven tannins. The palate is complex and lively, with the Nebbiolo’s classic tension between savoury and floral notes, and a finish of striking persistence.
Barbaresco sits within Italy’s famed Piedmont region, in the Langhe hills, just north of Alba. The combination of calcareous marl soils and the area’s gently rolling topography produces Nebbiolo of refinement and elegance. The region enjoys a continental climate with significant day-night temperature variation, encouraging aromatic complexity and fresh acidity. Historically, Barbaresco has been overshadowed by its neighbour Barolo, yet it boasts its own identity: Barbaresco wines tend to be somewhat softer and more approachable in youth, yet the best, such as Roagna’s, can age for decades.
Gastronomically, Crichet Pajé 2013 deserves richly nuanced dishes. Classic Piedmontese fare is a perfect match: think slow-braised beef (brasato al Barbaresco), roasted game birds, or tajarin pasta with wild mushroom ragù. Further afield, try with rack of lamb studded with herbs, or mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Castelmagno. The wine’s aromatics and structure also beautifully counterpoint dishes with black truffle or porcini.
For optimal enjoyment, decant at least two hours prior to serving to allow the wine to fully open up. The ideal serving temperature is 17-18°C. Serve in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to accentuate its bouquet and complexity. This is a wine for contemplation and special occasions, evolving beautifully over the course of a meal or evening.
