The 2007 Barbaresco Asili Riserva from Bruno Giacosa is an exceptional expression of Nebbiolo, the grape variety behind some of Italy’s most revered reds. Hailing from the esteemed Asili vineyard, this wine benefits not only from a storied terroir but also from Giacosa’s meticulous vinification—fermentation in stainless steel followed by long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. The 2007 vintage brought a warm growing season in the Langhe, resulting in grapes with great ripeness and supple tannins, while still retaining classic Nebbiolo aromatics: dried rose petals, sour cherries, earthy truffles, and subtle hints of tar and sweet spices.
Barbaresco DOC is situated in the Piedmont region, nestled in the rolling hills just northeast of Alba. This appellation, though often compared to neighbouring Barolo, typically offers Nebbiolo wines of greater finesse, elegance, and approachability in youth, owing largely to the lighter soils and slightly milder microclimate. Asili is one of Barbaresco’s most celebrated crus, noted for its calcareous soils, which impart an ethereal fragrance and persistent finish to the wines. The region’s rich winemaking tradition is reflected in Bruno Giacosa’s uncompromising pursuit of quality, making his bottles highly sought after among collectors and connoisseurs.
With its refined structure and layered complexity, this Barbaresco is a natural companion for food. Traditional Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin pasta with white truffle, braised veal shank (ossobuco), or a rich risotto al Barbaresco are exquisite pairings. The wine’s firm, but polished tannins also stand up beautifully to roasted game, wild mushroom preparations, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least an hour before serving to let its bouquet unfold. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to enhance its aromatics and balance. This 2007 Asili Riserva is at a lovely stage of maturity now and will continue to evolve gracefully if cellared further.
