Bruno Giacosa’s Barbaresco Asili Riserva 2004 stands as one of the great expressions of Nebbiolo from the revered hillside cru of Asili in the heart of Barbaresco. This revered cuvée, produced only in exceptional vintages, showcases the power and poise of Nebbiolo when handled by one of its true masters. The 2004 vintage benefited from mild weather and a long, even growing season, allowing for outstanding ripeness and balance. Hand-picked Nebbiolo grapes from the Asili vineyard—famed for its calcareous soils—were aged at length in large, traditional oak botti, gently refining the wine’s structure while preserving the grape’s fragrant purity. In the glass, this wine offers an exquisite array of aromas, from rose petals, sour cherry, and dried violets, to hints of tobacco and anise. The palate is structured yet elegant, with velvety tannins and a lingering mineral core, all hallmarks of both Giacosa’s craftsmanship and the Asili site.
The Barbaresco DOC region lies in the Langhe hills of Piemonte, an area celebrated for its undulating vineyards and patchwork of soils, rich in limestone and clay. The climate is continental, with warm days and cool nights, fostering excellent ripening conditions for Nebbiolo. Barbaresco historically was often overshadowed by Barolo, but today it is recognised for its finesse and earlier approachability. The Asili vineyard itself is considered one of Barbaresco’s premier crus, sought after for the balance and scented complexity it imparts to its wines.
A wine of this pedigree deserves to be paired thoughtfully. Traditional Piemontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in wine), wild mushroom risotto, or tajarin pasta with white truffle will highlight the earthy and floral nuances of this Barbaresco. Lamb shank, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, or even game meats like venison would also be excellent matches, as would delicate preparations involving roasted root vegetables and herbs.
For optimal enjoyment, decant this Barbaresco for at least an hour to allow its complex bouquet to unfurl. Serve at 17-18°C to fully appreciate its aromatic depth and textural finesse. This is a wine that will reward contemplation and careful pairing, embodying the soul of Piemonte in every sip.
