Viniou Reviews

Franco Conterno’s Barbaresco DOC Cuvée Albesani 2020 is a striking expression of Nebbiolo, the hallmark grape of the Piedmont region in northern Italy. Crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo grown on the prestigious Albesani cru, the wine embodies both the elegance and underlying power characteristic of Barbaresco. The 2020 vintage benefitted from a warm growing season, resulting in grapes that achieved optimal ripeness yet preserved Nebbiolo’s signature acidity. The vinification pays homage to local tradition, often featuring fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks followed by a period of maturation in large Slavonian oak botti, which allows the wine to gain structure and complexity without overpowering its delicate floral and red fruit notes.

The Barbaresco appellation sits within the Langhe hills of Piemonte, an area celebrated worldwide for its exceptional terroir. The combination of clay-limestone soils, a temperate continental climate with ample diurnal temperature variation, and the region’s famed morning fogs creates ideal conditions for Nebbiolo. Historically, Barbaresco has had to contend with the shadow of its more robust cousin Barolo, but in recent decades it has more than earned its reputation for producing distinctly elegant and perfumed reds. Wines from Albesani, a highly regarded MGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva), are known for their finesse, nuanced aromatics, and especially their ageing potential.

For food pairings, this Barbaresco excels alongside dishes that can match its complexity without overwhelming its subtleties. Traditional Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo (braised beef in Barolo), tajarin pasta with wild mushroom ragù, or roasted game birds make excellent companions. Hard, aged cheeses like Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano also work beautifully, as do risottos featuring white truffle in season.

When serving, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its array of aromas—rose petal, cherry, earth and gentle spice—to unfurl. The ideal serving temperature is between 16-18°C, which best highlights its structure and aromatic depth.
