Viniou Reviews

The Sottimano Barbaresco Currà 2020 is a remarkable expression of Nebbiolo, the celebrated grape of the Piedmont region in north-western Italy. This cuvée hails specifically from the Currà vineyard, one of the esteemed crus of Barbaresco, renowned for producing wines of refined elegance and complexity. The 2020 vintage benefited from favourable weather conditions, resulting in exceptional ripeness and balance. Traditionally vinified, this wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in French oak barrels, allowing the purity of the Nebbiolo fruit and the distinctive terroir to shine through. In the glass, expect a brilliant ruby colour with expressive aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and hints of tar and spice. The palate is structured yet silky, with fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that confer both approachability in youth and great potential for cellaring.

Barbaresco enjoys a privileged location within the Langhe hills of Piedmont, an area with rolling landscapes and a patchwork of vineyard parcels. The climate is continental, tempered by the Tanaro River, with hot summers and cool autumns that favour slow grape maturation. Currà’s marl and limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine’s minerality and finesse. Barbaresco’s history is steeped in tradition: historically overshadowed by Barolo, it has, in recent decades, gained a reputation for producing Nebbiolo wines of exquisite aromatic delicacy and harmonious balance.

Given its elegance and complexity, Sottimano’s Barbaresco Currà pairs beautifully with classic regional dishes such as Tajarin al Tartufo (egg pasta with truffles), brasato al Barbaresco (beef braised in Barbaresco wine), or a selection of mature Piedmontese cheeses. Its nuanced flavours also complement roasted duck, wild mushroom risotto, and game birds, making it a versatile companion to rich and savoury fare.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for an hour before serving to allow its bouquet to open fully. Serve at a temperature of 16–18°C. While already delicious now, this Barbaresco will reward further ageing, developing deeper complexity over the next decade or more.
