Paitin’s Barbaresco Faset 2020 is a remarkable red wine, expressing the finesse and complexity typical of its prestigious DOC appellation in Piedmont. Made entirely from Nebbiolo, the region’s signature grape, this cuvée comes from vineyards in the Faset cru, famed for producing wines of depth and elegance. The 2020 vintage showcases a combination of vibrant fruit and classic structure: expect aromas of ripe cherry, wild strawberry, and plum interwoven with floral notes of violet and rose, accompanied by hints of liquorice, menthol, subtle spices, and a touch of forest undergrowth. The palate is defined by firm, refined tannins, a vivid acidity which frames the fruit, and a persistent, savoury finish. Traditional vinification and ageing in large oak casks allow the purity and character of Nebbiolo to shine through, while also bringing harmony and depth.
The Barbaresco DOC area, lying in the rolling hills of the Langhe in north-west Italy, enjoys a temperate continental climate, marked by warm, sunny days and cool nights. This diurnal variation, coupled with the marl and limestone-rich soils, encourages slow ripening, ensuring both aromatic complexity and structural finesse in the wines. The Faset cru is especially prized for its well-drained soils, which contribute to Nebbiolo’s characteristic perfume and silkiness. Historically, Barbaresco has long stood in the shadow of neighbouring Barolo, but today it is celebrated for its more approachable style and grace.
Barbaresco pairs beautifully with refined Piemonte cuisine. Try it alongside braised beef cheek, slow-cooked lamb shank, or wild mushroom risotto to echo its earthy complexity and robust tannins. It’s a classic partner to traditional Piemontese dishes such as tajarin al tartufo (egg pasta with truffle) or agnolotti del plin (small stuffed pasta with roast meat). Aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or local Castelmagno also complement its prowess.
For the best tasting experience, decant the wine at least an hour in advance, allowing its bouquet to unfold. Serve at 16-18°C, which will showcase both its aromatic intensity and palate structure. In the right conditions, it will evolve beautifully over the next decade.
