Roagna’s Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti 2018 is a stunning example of traditional Piedmontese craftsmanship. This red wine, hailing from the famous Barbaresco appellation, is crafted from Nebbiolo grapes sourced exclusively from old vines (“Vecchie Viti”) in the Pajè vineyard. The 2018 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, marked by moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall, promoting perfect ripening and phenolic complexity. In the cellar, Roagna is known for their uncompromising approach: long macerations, use of native yeasts, and extensive ageing in large neutral oak casks. This ensures an honest expression of both vineyard and varietal. The result is a wine of remarkable intensity and nuance, often displaying aromas of wild cherry, dried rose petals, orange zest, earthy truffle, and delicate spices, underpinned by fine, persistent tannins and vibrant acidity.
The Barbaresco area sits within the Langhe hills of Piedmont, a region renowned for its tradition, terroir, and exceptional Nebbiolo. The Pajè cru itself is a south-west facing amphitheatre with calcareous marl soils, which contribute both elegance and mineral nerve to the wines. The region’s moderate continental climate, influenced by the Tanaro river, brings warm days and cool nights, allowing Nebbiolo to develop its signature aromatic complexity and refined structure. Barbaresco has a long winemaking history and, compared to Barolo, tends to yield more approachable, yet no less ageworthy, wines.
Pairing this Barbaresco is a delight. Its complexity and fine tannins are perfectly suited to classic northern Italian cuisine. Think of brasato al Barbaresco (beef braised in the wine itself), Tajarin pasta with white truffle, hearty mushroom risotto or aged cheeses such as Castelmagno and Parmigiano Reggiano. The wine’s structure also complements roasted game birds and noble cuts of veal.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least an hour in advance to unfurl its bouquet and soften the youthful grip of tannins. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This wine promises pleasure now with careful aeration but will reward further cellaring over the next decade or more.
