Fèlsina Berardenga’s 2013 Fontalloro is an iconic Tuscan red, produced primarily from Sangiovese grapes sourced from vineyards straddling the boundary between Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi. Although labelled as an IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) rather than a DOC or DOCG, this wine is renowned for showcasing the true character and versatility of Sangiovese. Harvested from select plots with diverse exposures and soils, the grapes are carefully handpicked and undergo a traditional vinification, featuring an extended maceration for depth and structure followed by maturation in French barriques for around 18 to 22 months. The 2013 vintage, which experienced a cool season and a slow, even ripening, imparts bright acidity, ripe tannins, and complex aromatics to this cuvée.
Tuscany is globally celebrated for its rolling hills, medieval heritage, and long winemaking tradition dating back to the Etruscans. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm days, cool nights, and a distinct seasonal rhythm which allows Sangiovese grapes to develop both lively fruit character and refined structure. The soils in this area are a fascinating mix of limestone, clay, and marl, offering excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Fèlsina, based near Castelnuovo Berardenga at the southeastern tip of Chianti Classico, combines historical respect with innovative techniques, creating wines that reflect both terroir and precision winemaking.
Fontalloro’s rich bouquet of wild cherry, plum, leather, damp earth, and a touch of tobacco makes it a versatile match at the table. Classic pairings would embrace Tuscan cuisine: try pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar pasta), grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, or aged pecorino cheese. Its structure and acidity also complement rustic dishes such as braised lamb shank or mushroom risotto. Decanting the wine prior to serving will help soften the tannins and fully release its aromatics.
For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16-18°C. This temperature highlights the wine’s freshness and layered complexity. Fontalloro’s depth will benefit from a few more years of cellaring, but the 2013 is already graceful and expressive when given time to breathe before tasting.
