Fèlsina Fontalloro 2017 is one of Tuscany’s iconic red wines, a singular expression crafted only from Sangiovese grapes, sourced from vineyards straddling the border between Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi. The 2017 vintage is marked by a particularly warm and dry growing season, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration and depth. The soils here vary from the calcareous clays typical of Chianti to sandier deposits in the neighbouring hills, lending the wine a complex interplay of structure and aromatic refinement. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, then the wine matures for around 18-22 months in French oak barriques, followed by bottle ageing, enhancing both its complexity and longevity.
The region of Tuscany is revered for its undulating hills, ideal local climate, and historic dedication to the Sangiovese grape. The warm, sun-drenched days and cooler nights, combined with the diversity of soils – from galestro and albarese stones in Chianti to more alluvial earth in the Senesi – are instrumental in developing both power and finesse in the wine. Tuscany’s reputation for winemaking tradition stretches back centuries, with estates like Fèlsina continually pushing the boundaries of quality while upholding regional heritage.
Fontalloro 2017 is an intensely aromatic wine, with dark cherry, blackcurrant, wild herbs, tobacco, and sweet spices on the nose. On the palate, it delivers ripe yet vivid fruit, silky tannins, and a hallmark freshness, balancing richness with elegance. Such a wine calls for equally flavourful dishes: classic Italian pairings include bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary, or a hearty wild boar ragù over pappardelle. Ossobuco, aged pecorino, or a mushroom risotto will also complement its depth beautifully.
For optimum enjoyment, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for at least an hour before serving allows its complexity to unfold fully. While already accessible due to the 2017 vintage’s ripeness, Fontalloro will continue to develop gracefully in cellar conditions over the coming decade.
