The 2015 Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido is one of the most refined expressions of the so-called Super Tuscan movement. Crafted mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, this red wine epitomises elegance and restraint, combining the structure of Bordeaux with the sun-drenched expressiveness of Tuscany. The 2015 vintage benefited from balanced weather conditions, allowing for slow, even ripening and resulting in an exceptionally harmonious wine. Vinification is characterised by a careful selection of grapes, fermentation in stainless steel vats, and ageing in French oak barriques, including a portion of new wood, for about 24 months. This process imparts nuanced complexity, finesse, and silky tannins to the finished wine, as well as the signature graphite and cassis notes typical of Sassicaia.
Nestled in the coastal Bolgheri area of Tuscany, Tenuta San Guido enjoys a unique terroir comprising stony soils, often compared to those of Graves in Bordeaux, and the cooling influence of sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea. This microclimate tempers the region’s Mediterranean heat and preserves freshness in the fruit, supporting long maturation and the development of fine tannins. The estate pioneered Bordeaux blends in Tuscany starting in the mid-twentieth century, which changed the perception and global reputation of Tuscan wines. Bolgheri, although a relatively young appellation, is now synonymous with world-class, age-worthy reds.
Sassicaia is a wine best paired with refined yet flavourful cuisine. Its structure and depth make it a perfect match for roasted or grilled meats such as Chianina beef steak, venison, or lamb shoulder. Equally, it will shine alongside Tuscan classics like wild boar ragù or earthy mushroom risotto. For a regional touch, accompany with Pecorino Toscano or aged Parmesan.
To fully appreciate the aromatics and texture, serve Sassicaia 2015 at a temperature of 16-18°C, ideally after decanting for an hour or two. This allows the complex bouquet of dark fruits, cedar, herbs, and mineral notes to reveal themselves gradually in the glass. Enjoy this vintage now for its generous, supple fruit, or cellar it for a decade or more to discover further layers of refinement.
