Viniou Reviews

Armatura’s 2020 Brunello di Montalcino showcases the nobility of Sangiovese Grosso, crafted exclusively from this revered variety. The 2020 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, offering ripe, concentrated fruit while preserving freshness. The carefully selected grapes undergo traditional fermentation followed by an extended maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels, which imparts subtle structure and elegance without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. In the glass, expect a ruby-red hue with garnet reflections. Aromas are evocative, featuring crushed cherries, wild strawberries, dried violets, forest floor and an undercurrent of sweet spice. The palate is harmonious, unfolding layers of red fruit, licorice, tobacco and delicate earthy notes, all supported by firm yet refined tannins and a vibrant acidity that ensures complexity and longevity.

Brunello di Montalcino hails from one of Tuscany's most celebrated terroirs. Montalcino’s vineyards sit on rolling hills, enjoying a warm, dry Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature swings, which contribute to the development of intense aromas and the preservation of acidity. The soils, primarily galestro (a schistous marl) and limestone, offer excellent drainage and minerality, lending structure and finesse to the wines. Historically, this appellation emerged as a distinct entity in the late 19th century and quickly gained a reputation for producing some of Italy’s most age-worthy and profound red wines, frequently cited as the crown jewel of Tuscan viticulture.

Such a stately wine deserves pairings that highlight its depth and character. Roast meats, particularly Tuscan-style pork or lamb seasoned with rosemary and garlic, are classic companions. Local dishes such as wild boar ragù over pappardelle, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or aged Pecorino Toscano allow the wine’s structure and savoury undertones to shine. For a vegetarian option, try grilled aubergines, mushroom risotto, or baked cannelloni with ricotta and spinach.

For optimal appreciation, decant the wine an hour before serving to allow its bouquet to open fully. Serve at 16-18°C to best reveal its aromas and elegant palate. This Brunello di Montalcino will evolve beautifully over the next decade, rewarding both present enjoyment and cellaring.
