Viniou Reviews

Fanti’s Brunello di Montalcino DOC Vallocchio 2017 is a distinguished red wine hailing from the celebrated hills of Tuscany. Crafted predominantly from Sangiovese Grosso, the emblematic varietal of the region, this cuvée reflects both the character of its grape and the fine terroir of Montalcino. The 2017 vintage was marked by warm, dry conditions, resulting in lower yields but exceptionally concentrated fruit. The wine typically spends several years maturing in large Slavonian oak barrels, allowing the tannins to refine and complex secondary aromas to develop, all while maintaining a beautiful core of vibrant fruit. Expect a deep garnet colour, enticing aromas of ripe cherry, plum and leather, and a palate with silky tannins, well-integrated acidity, and lingering notes of spice, balsamic, and dried herbs.

The Montalcino region is famed for its rolling hills, sun-drenched slopes, and varied soils ranging from clay and limestone to galestro, a crumbly marl that adds elegance and structure to the wines. Situated in southern Tuscany, Montalcino enjoys a slightly warmer and drier climate than its Chianti neighbours, allowing Sangiovese to ripen fully and develop rather powerful, ageworthy expressions. The area has a rich, centuries-old winemaking heritage, but it was the formal recognition of Brunello di Montalcino as a DOCG in 1980 that cemented its status as one of Italy’s most prestigious wines.

This wine’s depth and tannic structure make it a superb companion to robust dishes. Traditional Tuscan fare such as pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar ragù), bistecca alla fiorentina (grilled T-bone steak), or aged pecorino cheese are classic matches. The wine also pairs well with game dishes, rich mushroom risottos, or roasted lamb with Mediterranean herbs.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio 2017 at least an hour before serving, allowing its full aromatic profile to emerge. Serve at 16-18°C to best highlight both its complex bouquet and harmonious structure. This vintage can be enjoyed now for its youthful vibrancy or cellared for further development over the next decade.
