The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino “Cuvée Collezione del Conte” from Castello di Filicaja is a fine representative of one of Tuscany’s most revered red wines. Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, this vintage captures the depth and elegance characteristic of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. In 2016, the region benefited from favourable climatic conditions, leading to a slow, even ripening and resulting in a wine with a superb balance between power and finesse. The vinification process involved traditional fermentation on skins, followed by an extended ageing period, often in large Slavonian oak casks, which refines the tannic structure and contributes subtle notes of spice to the expressive dark cherry and plum aromas. The palate displays remarkable structure, freshness, and a lingering savoury finish.
Montalcino itself, nestled to the south of Siena, enjoys a warm, dry Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, particularly beneficial for Sangiovese’s development. The soils in the area are complex, with a mix of clay, limestone, and galestro (a crumbly schist), adding minerality and great longevity to the wines. The region has a storied history, earning DOCG status for Brunello di Montalcino and establishing itself as a benchmark for Italian fine wine since the 19th century.
Given its complexity and firm tannic backbone, this Brunello pairs beautifully with rich and savoury dishes. Classic Tuscan cuisine such as wild boar ragù with pappardelle will echo the wild herbal notes and depth of the wine. Roasted lamb with rosemary, aged pecorino cheese, and mushroom risotto are also excellent companions, allowing the earthy undertones of the wine to shine. For a local touch, try it with bistecca alla fiorentina or hearty vegetable stews.
For optimal appreciation, decant the wine at least an hour before serving and enjoy it at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will allow the bouquet to express its full range, from lifted floral notes to mature fruit and nuanced spice, offering a commanding yet graceful tasting experience.
