Viniou Reviews

Casanova di Neri’s 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a distinguished red crafted exclusively from 100% Sangiovese, locally known as Sangiovese Grosso. The 2020 vintage in Montalcino was characterised by a warm and balanced season, yielding wines of both structure and purity. The nose on this wine evokes ripe cherry, wild strawberry, and hints of violet, layered with subtle notes of liquorice, sweet spice, and earthy undertones that reflect meticulous vinification and careful ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels. On the palate, it is full-bodied, elegantly framed by fresh acidity and polished tannins, with lingering flavours of black fruits, Mediterranean herbs, and mineral nuances that are so emblematic of outstanding Brunello.

The region of Montalcino, nestled in southern Tuscany, benefits from a unique combination of Mediterranean climate, hilltop vineyards, and well-drained galestro and clay soils. This terroir, coupled with significant diurnal temperature variation, allows Sangiovese to fully ripen while preserving vital acidity and aromatic complexity. Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most prestigious appellations, recognised for producing age-worthy wines with remarkable finesse and depth. The area’s ridge-top villages and cypress-lined landscapes have a winemaking history dating back centuries, with the Brunello DOCG awarded in 1980, ratifying its status among the Italian elite.

Pair this Brunello with robust, flavourful dishes that complement its complexity and persistence. Traditional Tuscan fare, such as bistecca alla fiorentina (chargrilled Florentine steak), wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or slow-cooked lamb shank, harmonises beautifully. Truffle-infused risotto, aged pecorino, or game birds are also excellent companions, marrying regional authenticity with the wine’s savoury profile.

For the optimal tasting experience, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving, which will help open up its aromatic bouquet and flavours. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to fully appreciate its structure and elegance. This Brunello will continue to evolve gracefully in the bottle for many years, rewarding patience with ever greater complexity.
