Poggio di Sotto's Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a strikingly elegant expression of Sangiovese Grosso, derived from meticulous vineyard management and old vines often reaching over 50 years in age. This vintage captures the essence of its terroir, with grapes harvested by hand and a vinification process that emphasises natural yeast fermentations and lengthy macerations. Ageing is traditionally conducted in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine's complex aromatics and refined tannins to develop without overwhelming its delicate fruit core. The 2018 vintage, shaped by a cooler and slightly wetter growing season, displays notable finesse, vibrant acidity, and pronounced purity, with notes of sour cherry, rose petals, balsamic herbs, tobacco leaf, and a sophisticated mineral undertone.
The Montalcino region in southern Tuscany is renowned for its unique microclimate, combining Mediterranean influences with cooling breezes from Mount Amiata and significant diurnal temperature variation. Soils here are a mosaic of galestro (friable schist), clay, and limestone, which bestow wonderful structure and longevity on the wines. Brunello di Montalcino’s history is rooted in the visionary efforts of a handful of producers in the late 19th century, who recognised that Sangiovese Grosso could produce wines of remarkable depth and age-worthiness. Today, only the eponymous Brunello grape is permitted for this DOCG, reinforcing its status among Italy’s finest red wines.
Pair this Brunello di Montalcino with dishes that respect its depth and subtlety. Classic pairings include wild boar ragù with pappardelle, Tuscan steak (bistecca alla fiorentina), or slow-braised lamb with herbs. For a more regional approach, sheep’s milk pecorino from Pienza or mushroom risotto can also highlight the wine’s aromatics and freshness.
To best appreciate Poggio di Sotto’s 2018, decant it for at least two hours prior to serving. Serve at 16-18°C to allow its bouquet to fully evolve in the glass. With proper cellaring, this wine will continue to flourish, rewarding patience with even greater nuance and complexity over the next decade or more.
