Viniou Reviews

Castello di Velona’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkable representation of this renowned Tuscan appellation. Produced exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, one of Italy’s most noble grape varieties, this Brunello benefits from expert traditional vinification: extended maceration, slow fermentation, and lengthy maturation in large oak casks. The 2009 vintage, known for its generous sunshine and favourable growing conditions, delivers a wine of impressive depth, with ripe cherry, plum and slight fig aromas, layered with tobacco, leather, spice, and hints of earthy undergrowth. The palate is powerful yet refined, showing velvety tannins and an uplifting acidity which bodes well for further cellaring.

The village of Montalcino sits atop a Tuscan hill in the province of Siena, looking out over a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and forests. The Mediterranean climate ensures warm, dry summers and mild winters. The Brunello zone’s soils are notably varied—galestro, clay, and limestone—providing optimal drainage and complexity, and contributing to the wine’s structure and ageing potential. Montalcino itself has long-standing wine heritage, but Brunello di Montalcino only gained international renown over the last century for producing some of Italy’s most age-worthy reds.

This full-bodied, textured Brunello pairs superbly with robust, flavourful dishes. Traditional Tuscan game meats, such as wild boar ragù, roast duck, or bistecca alla Fiorentina, are excellent matches. Alternatively, consider rich mushroom risotto or truffle-infused pasta. Aged Pecorino Toscano cheese complements its savoury depth beautifully.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this 2009 Brunello di Montalcino at least one to two hours before serving. The ideal tasting temperature is 16-18°C, allowing the complex bouquet and layered palate to express themselves fully. This wine will reward both patient cellaring and convivial meals among friends.
