Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona’s Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso 2016 is a quintessential expression of the Sangiovese grape, locally referred to as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello in the Montalcino district. Harvested during an exceptional vintage, the 2016 Pianrosso is renowned for its remarkable balance, depth and longevity. Vinified with meticulous care, this Brunello is aged for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the complexity of fruit and terroir to shine whilst softening the tannins and adding a subtle savoury undertone. The nose reveals a splendid bouquet of ripe cherry, black plum and violet, underscored by earthy notes, hints of tobacco and a whisper of balsamic. The palate is powerful yet poised, marked by a core of dark fruit, lively acidity and fine-grained tannic structure, culminating in a persistent finish with touches of spice and flint.
The Brunello di Montalcino DOC is located in southern Tuscany, in a hilly region defined by its unique combination of soils—ranging from galestro (a friable schist) and limestone to clay and volcanic deposits. The region enjoys a warm, dry climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations that slow ripening and preserve the aromatic intensity of the wines. The appellation is rooted in centuries of winemaking tradition, but only acquired international fame in the last century, thanks especially to impeccable producers like Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona.
Such a distinguished Brunello pairs beautifully with Tuscan specialities and classic Italian fare. Consider serving it alongside a bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, or aged Pecorino cheese. Mushroom risotto, roasted game or lamb shoulder infused with rosemary also complement its structure and aromatic profile. For a local touch, enjoy it with pici alla Chianina, a hearty pasta dish with slow-cooked beef sauce.
To appreciate the full spectrum of aromas and the elegant structure, decant the wine for at least two hours before serving. The ideal tasting temperature is 16-18°C, which will soften the tannins and highlight the complexity of this exceptional Brunello.
