Viniou Reviews

The Tenuta di Sesti Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is an exceptional Tuscan red wine crafted exclusively from Sangiovese, known locally as Sangiovese Grosso. The 2017 vintage was marked by a warm, dry growing season, resulting in wines of intensity, structure, and notable concentration. Brunello is renowned for its traditional long ageing: by regulations, this wine rests a minimum of two years in oak and at least four months in bottle before release, allowing the aromatic complexity and tannic structure to develop elegantly. In the glass, you can expect vibrant red cherry, blackberry, ripe plum, and nuances of dried herbs, leather, and subtle spice, with the minerality and freshness characteristic of the Montalcino terroir.

Montalcino, set in southern Tuscany, is celebrated for its rolling hills, warm Mediterranean climate, and diverse clay-limestone soils. The region benefits from significant diurnal temperature shifts, which help preserve the vibrancy and aromatic precision of Sangiovese grapes. With a viticultural history dating back centuries, Brunello di Montalcino was granted its prestigious DOCG status in 1980 and has since been revered as one of Italy’s most noble wines. Tenuta di Sesti, a highly respected estate, lies in the south-western part of the appellation, where land and climate lend structure, depth, and a distinct sense of place to their Brunello.

Given the wine’s complexity and robust structure, it shines alongside rich, flavourful dishes. Traditional Tuscan fare such as wild boar ragù with pappardelle, bistecca alla fiorentina, or slow-braised beef will perfectly highlight its profound flavours. Mushroom risotto or aged pecorino cheeses also pair beautifully. This Brunello’s earthy undertones and firm tannins work in harmony with game, grilled meats, and hearty Italian stews, making it a natural partner for regional cuisine.

For serving, decant the wine about an hour before tasting to best reveal its layered bouquet and texture. The ideal serving temperature is 16-18°C, allowing all the aromatic nuances and structural finesse to unfold gracefully. This 2017 Brunello di Montalcino can be enjoyed now with some aeration or cellared further to develop its complexity over the next decade.
