Antinori’s Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a celebrated expression of Sangiovese Grosso, the variety exclusively permitted for this esteemed DOCG. The vintage 2017, marked by a particularly hot and dry season in Tuscany, has given this wine a profile of abundant ripe fruit, finely woven tannins, and an appealing freshness enlivened by careful vinification. Vinified in large oak casks and matured for at least 24 months, it is imbued with aromas of wild cherry, plum, dried herbs and subtle hints of tobacco and sweet spice, reflective of both the grape and meticulous élevage.
The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG hails from the southern slopes around the hilltop town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, an area renowned for its exceptional terroir. The soils are primarily galestro (schist and clay) and alberese (limestone), which, combined with warmer and drier conditions compared to Chianti, allow for optimal ripening and concentration of Sangiovese. The historical reputation of Brunello has long stood for longevity, depth, and powerful structure, qualities that are still upheld today. Montalcino’s winemaking roots reach deep into the 19th century, but it is only in recent decades that the area, led by houses like Antinori, has set a benchmark in finesse and consistency.
This Brunello’s robust structure and aromatic intensity make it a fine partner for hearty Italian dishes. Traditional pairings include Tuscan wild boar ragù with pappardelle, bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef cheeks, or a platter of aged pecorino and cured meats from the region. The wine will also elevate mushroom risottos and roasted game such as duck or venison.
For ideal enjoyment, decant the wine at least one or two hours before service to allow the bouquet to unfurl and the tannins to soften. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C, which will enhance its aromatic complexity and allow the palate to appreciate its elegant power and lingering finish.
