Tignanello 2016 from Tenuta Tignanello, produced by the renowned Marchesi Antinori, is a landmark wine both for Tuscany and for Italy’s modern wine renaissance. This red blend is primarily based on Sangiovese, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, resulting in a wine of immense character and complexity. The 2016 vintage stands out as one of the strongest of the decade, showing deep concentration, ripe fruit, and remarkable harmony. Vinification is conducted with meticulous attention: after careful selection of the grapes, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by ageing in French and Hungarian oak barriques for about 15 months, and further refinement in the bottle.
Originating from the heart of Chianti Classico in Tuscany, Tignanello benefits from vineyards situated on the gentle hills between the Greve and Pesa rivers. The soils are rich in limestone and schist, contributing freshness and structure, while the region’s warm, temperate climate allows for optimal ripening, enhancing the intensity and aromatic depth of the blend. The Antinori family has been influential in the area for over six centuries, and Tignanello was among the first to challenge Chianti’s traditions in the 1970s by embracing a bolder, more international style that has since become iconic.
This full-bodied and elegant wine marries beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine. Florentine steak (bistecca alla fiorentina) is a natural pairing, the juicy meat matching the wine’s powerful tannins and savoury notes. Traditional wild boar ragù tossed with pappardelle, or roast lamb with rosemary, are also superb, while a platter of aged Pecorino cheese captures the earthy, spicy undertones of the wine. Tignanello’s depth also allows it to stand up to international fare such as roast game, beef Wellington, or truffle-infused dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, let the wine breathe for at least an hour before serving. Ideal tasting temperature is between 16 and 18°C, allowing the complex bouquet—ripe cherries, cassis, tobacco, spices, and subtle oak—to fully reveal itself. Enjoyed now or cellared for another decade, Tignanello 2016 promises profound pleasure for lovers of fine wine.
