Viniou Reviews

Bindi Sergardi’s La Ghirlanda 2019 Chianti Classico DOCG is a fine expression of Tuscan winemaking, produced predominantly from the Sangiovese grape, which is the backbone of this historic appellation. The vintage 2019 in Tuscany is considered very good, benefiting from a mild spring and an ideal summer, resulting in ripe, balanced fruit with harmonious acidity. The terroir of the Chianti Classico DOCG is marked by galestro and alberese soils, a mixture of clay and limestone, which contribute minerality and complexity to the wines. The traditional vinification methods employed by Bindi Sergardi favour elegance and authenticity, with gentle extraction during fermentation and a maturation in both large casks and smaller barrels to preserve the pure character of Sangiovese while adding subtle structure and polish.

Chianti Classico, nestled between Florence and Siena, is one of Italy’s most revered wine regions. With its rolling hills, the region enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with cooling breezes from the Apennine mountains. The altitude, often between 250 to 600 metres, ensures significant diurnal temperature shifts that help retain freshness and nuance in the wines. The region’s history of viticulture stretches back to the Etruscans and has been shaped over centuries, earning its DOCG status and proud black rooster seal. This legacy and dedication to quality are evident in the vibrant, expressive reds produced here.

The 2019 La Ghirlanda presents aromas of ripe cherry, red plum, violet, and hints of dried herbs and spice. Its lively acidity and fine-grained tannins make it exceptionally versatile at the table. Classic pairings include Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or aged Pecorino cheese. It will also complement roasted game birds, grilled lamb chops, or a mushroom risotto, enhancing both the dish and the wine with every sip.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving and pour at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will allow the wine’s complexity and refined structure to unfold, offering a distinctive taste of Tuscany in your glass.
