The 2023 Cuvée Bric Sghijon from Azienda Agricola Quila is a red wine hailing from the Roero DOCG, in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont. This cuvée is produced from native grape varieties, most notably Nebbiolo, the dominant grape in the Roero appellation, renowned for its expressive bouquet and refined structure. 2023 was a vintage shaped by favourable weather, allowing for optimal grape ripening and a balanced combination of freshness and aromatic complexity. The vinification process at Quila typically involves careful extraction and maturation, often in large wooden casks, in order to preserve both the varietal purity and the characteristic vibrancy of the Roero terroir. The result is a ruby-hued wine, scented with red cherries, wild strawberries, rose petals, and a subtle hint of white pepper, underpinned by delicate tannins and a lingering mineral finish.

Roero lies just north of the better-known Barolo and Barbaresco zones, across the Tanaro River, blessed with a unique sandy-limestone soil composition which imparts finesse and pronounced aromatic lift to its Nebbiolo wines. The rolling hills and relatively moderate climate, combined with a long history of viticulture dating back to Roman times, encourage nuanced, elegant wines with both immediate charm and aging potential. For food pairings, this refined Roero red beautifully complements traditional Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with white truffle, agnolotti del plin, or braised veal (brasato al Nebbiolo). Its balance of fruitiness and subtle tannins also makes it a superb match for roasted game, mushroom risotto, and mature cheeses like Castelmagno or Robiola. Consider serving with dishes featuring earthy flavours, which will enhance the wine’s own minerality and aromatic complexity.

To appreciate its full personality, decant the wine for around 30 minutes to allow the aromas to unfold. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to best express the purity of its fruit and the finesse of the tannic structure. This will ensure a memorable and authentic Roero DOCG experience.
