Viniou Reviews

Produttori del Barbaresco 2019 is a classic representation of one of Piedmont's most renowned red wines. This Barbaresco is crafted entirely from Nebbiolo, the signature grape variety of the region, and is known for its complex structure, elegance and remarkable ageing potential. The 2019 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, offering optimal ripeness and intensity. The wine is vinified traditionally, with extended maceration and maturation in large oak casks, resulting in a harmonious integration of tannin, fruit and subtle oak. In the glass, it displays a medium garnet colour, with aromas of wild cherries, rose petals, liquorice and delicate hints of tobacco and truffle. The palate is refined yet powerful, boasting firm but well-rounded tannins, bright acidity and an impressively long, nuanced finish.

Piedmont, in north-western Italy, is world-famous for its Nebbiolo-based wines, especially Barolo and Barbaresco. The region’s vineyards benefit from an interplay between the cold Alpine winds and the mild Mediterranean influence, creating notable temperature swings that enhance aromatic complexity and balance in the grapes. Barbaresco sits on slightly lower and warmer sites compared to Barolo, resulting in wines that are, in general, more approachable in their youth. The soils here are primarily calcareous clay, lending finesse and aromatic intensity to the Nebbiolo grape. The local winegrowing history runs deep, and the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative is highly respected for producing authentic, high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir.

Barbaresco’s structure and aromatic complexity make it a superb companion to rich Piedmontese cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as braised beef in red wine (Brasato al Barolo), agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, and mushroom risotto. It also excels alongside game, mature cheeses, and truffle-based dishes, all traditional to the region.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this Barbaresco at 16-18°C. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open up and reveal its intricate bouquet. This wine can be enjoyed now with proper aeration, but will reward further cellaring over the next ten to fifteen years.
