Col Orcia’s 2018 Aglianico del Taburno DOCG exemplifies the quintessence of southern Italy’s noble red grape, Aglianico. The wine is crafted exclusively from Aglianico vines grown on the slopes of the Taburno massif, an area renowned for nurturing this grape to optimal ripeness and phenolic maturity. The 2018 vintage presents with a deep ruby colour and exhibits a complex aromatic palette—a medley of black cherry, blackberry, plum, and spiced nuances, underpinned by hints of tobacco and leather from meticulous ageing. While labelled as sec (dry), the palate is marked by firm yet refined tannins balanced by vibrant acidity, giving the wine both structure and longevity. Certified organic, Col Orcia’s approach to viticulture accentuates the purity of fruit and a pronounced sense of place.
Campania, and specifically the Taburno zone within the Benevento province, is celebrated for its volcanic soils—rich in minerals and well-drained—which impart depth and distinctive character to the wines. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with considerable diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity and finesse in the grapes. Historically, Aglianico is often referred to as the “Barolo of the South”, a nod to its aging potential and noble structure. Vineyards on the Taburno massif benefit from exceptional sun exposure and cooling mountain breezes, contributing freshness and aromatic complexity to the resulting wine.
Aglianico del Taburno, with its robust profile and earthy undertones, shines alongside hearty dishes. Local Campanian fare, such as slow-braised lamb shank in tomato and herbs or salsiccia alla brace (grilled sausage), is a natural match. The wine pairs equally well with mature cheeses, wild boar ragù, or porcini risotto, all of which highlight the grape’s savoury and spicy nuances.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for about an hour to allow the aromas to unfurl fully. Serve at 16-18°C in broad-bowled glasses to best appreciate its complexity and tannic structure. This vintage is ready to drink now, but will certainly evolve gracefully over the next five to eight years.
