Viniou Reviews

Col Orcia’s Cuvée Poggio Al Vento 2015, crafted under the prestigious Aglianico del Taburno DOCG in Campania, is a standout red wine made primarily from the Aglianico grape, renowned for its robust structure and ageing potential. The 2015 vintage enjoyed favourable growing conditions and has been marked for its rich fruit concentration and balance. The vineyards in Taburno are nestled on slopes benefitting from excellent exposure, with mineral-rich volcanic soils that imbue the wines with great depth and a distinct mineral backbone. Traditional vinification methods—often involving a long maceration and maturation in oak—allow the complexity of Aglianico to unfold, giving this cuvée both power and elegance.

Campania’s viticultural landscape is deeply influenced by its volcanic origins, most notably from Mount Vesuvius and the Apennines. The warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by cool mountain breezes, ensures a long growing season where grapes reach optimum ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This region has an illustrious history; viticulture here dates back to ancient Roman times, and today’s wines continue to reflect this unique heritage, standing as some of Italy’s most characterful and historically rooted.

Given the wine’s depth and full body, it pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes. Traditionally, it shines alongside Campanian cuisine such as braised beef (brasato al Taurasi), wild boar ragù, or lamb slow-cooked with Mediterranean herbs. Mature hard cheeses such as pecorino stagionato or even aged provolone will also complement its tannic grip and earthy undertones. For non-regional pairings, roasted game or mushroom risotto would work superbly, enhancing the wine’s dark fruit and savoury notes.

To best appreciate Col Orcia’s Cuvée Poggio Al Vento 2015, serve it at 16-18°C. Decanting for at least one hour prior to tasting will unlock its complex bouquet of black cherry, tobacco, leather, and spice. This wine is drinking beautifully now but will continue to develop further with a few more years in the cellar.
