Domaine Méo-Camuzet’s Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru 2010 is a wine of outstanding pedigree, hailing from one of Burgundy’s most esteemed crus. It is produced entirely from Pinot Noir, the only permitted grape for red Corton wines. The vineyard, Clos Rognet, is a historic parcel on the hallowed Corton hill, renowned for its old vines rooted in marly-limestone soils. The 2010 vintage in Burgundy is celebrated for its balance and freshness, resulting from a cool growing season that fostered superb aromatic intensity. Vinification at Méo-Camuzet is traditional yet meticulous, with careful extraction, significant but balanced use of new oak, and an emphasis on expressing the nuances of terroir.
La Côte de Beaune, and particularly the Corton hill, enjoys a complex patchwork of soils and aspects, giving rise to some of Burgundy’s longest-lived reds. The area is shaped not only by its unique soils, composed primarily of marls and iron-rich clays, but also by a semi-continental climate, marked by chilly winters and moderate, sunny summers. The history here is deeply entwined with Burgundian viticulture—monks were cultivating these lands centuries ago, etching out the grand cru parcels that still define the region’s reputation. Corton is the only hill in Burgundy where both grand cru red and white wines are produced, and Clos Rognet is prized for yielding wines of power, depth, and ageworthiness.
With its vivid expression of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and earthy undertones, along with floral and spicy notes, this Corton is ideally matched with dishes that mirror its complexity and structure. Classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin, roasted duck with cherries, or boeuf bourguignon will be sublime. For a refined pairing, consider roast lamb with herbes de Provence or wild mushroom risotto. Mature cheeses like Époisses or Comté also complement its layered palate.
For serving, decant the wine at least an hour in advance to allow the bouquet to fully open. Serve slightly below room temperature at 16–18°C to best appreciate its intricate aromas and refined tannins. This Grand Cru is drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve gracefully over several more years.
