The 2017 Corton Grand Cru "Cuvée Le Corton" from Bouchard Père & Fils is an excellent expression of Burgundy's remarkable terroir. Produced exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, this Grand Cru benefits from an outstanding vineyard site on the famous Corton hill. The 2017 vintage is known for its relatively cool summer and timely harvest, resulting in wines of both freshness and delightful ripeness. Bouchard Père & Fils, one of Burgundy's oldest producers, meticulously hand-harvests and selects grapes, employing traditional vinification methods with careful maceration and ageing in French oak barrels, which add structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
La Côte de Beaune, and especially the Corton AOC, is renowned for its diverse soils, ranging from limestone to marl, which bestow nuance and depth upon its wines. The region enjoys a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers, creating ideal conditions for Pinot Noir to reach its full potential, both in aromatics and structure. Corton’s Grand Cru status is a testament to its long and distinguished history, producing red wines of exceptional longevity and character. The slopes of Corton hill have been cultivated since the Middle Ages, with their orientation and soil diversity allowing for expressive and age-worthy wines.
With its rich structure, dark cherry and blackberry fruit, subtle earthy undertones and a hint of spicy oak, this Corton pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck with cherry sauce, beef Wellington, or even a mushroom risotto. Traditional Burgundian fare such as coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon will find an ideal partner in this wine's refined tannins and persistent finish.
For the best experience, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving to allow it to fully open up. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will highlight both its aromatic complexity and its silky texture, promising a memorable tasting moment, whether enjoyed now or after several more years of cellaring.
