Viniou Reviews

Aurélien Verdet’s 2019 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes is an elegant expression of Pinot Noir from one of the most storied appellations in Burgundy. Sourced from old vines, this cuvée exemplifies the intensity and complexity that can be achieved when mature roots reach deep into the Côte de Nuits’ renowned limestone-rich soils. The vintage 2019 brought a healthy growing season, resulting in expressive fruit with fine tannic structure. Traditional vinification methods, including gentle extraction and a restrained use of oak, have preserved the purity of the fruit while allowing subtle earthy and spicy nuances to develop. In the glass, expect aromas of wild strawberry, cherry, blackcurrant, and hints of violets, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lingering, silky finish accented by earthy undertones and gentle spice.

Vosne-Romanée, nestled in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, enjoys a reputation as perhaps the most illustrious village for Pinot Noir in all of Burgundy. The region is blessed with a cool continental climate moderated by hillside exposures that allow vines to ripen slowly, retaining great aromatic finesse and balancing acidity. The terroir here is a patchwork of limestone, clay, and marl, affording the wines both structure and perfume. Its history is deeply entwined with monastic viticulture and centuries of meticulous parcel mapping, resulting in a mosaic of small, highly prized vineyards that flourish under the region’s unique microclimate.

This delicate yet intense red pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast with cherry sauce, roast pigeon, or a classic coq au vin. Regional specialities like oeufs en meurette or beef bourguignon are also outstanding companions, as their deep, savoury flavours resonate with the complexity and freshness of the wine. On the cheese front, consider Époisses or a mature Comté to complement this Pinot’s subtle earthy and fruity profile.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for 30 to 45 minutes to open up the aromatic bouquet. Serve at 15-17°C to fully appreciate its nuanced character and soft texture. If cellaring, this wine will evolve gracefully over 7 to 10 years, gaining additional tertiary notes with patience.
