Viniou Reviews

Joseph Drouhin’s Beaune Premier Cru “Cuvée Les Grèves” 2005 is a distinguished red Burgundy, crafted from Pinot Noir grapes grown on one of the most esteemed lieux-dits of the Beaune appellation. The 2005 vintage stands out as a benchmark year in Burgundy, marked by ideal weather patterns that allowed for optimal grape maturity and balance. The Premier Cru status reflects both the quality of the terroir and the precise vinification practices at Joseph Drouhin. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods are used: grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, followed by a meticulous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, about a fifth of which are new, supporting the structure without overpowering the fine fruit and earthy nuances.

Beaune lies at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, a region cherished for its diverse, mineral-rich limestone and clay soils that lend finesse and complexity to its Pinot Noir. The climate here is strictly continental with marked seasonal contrasts, fostering grapes with vivid freshness and expressive aromatics. The history of Beaune dates back centuries, with “Les Grèves” specifically referenced since medieval times as one of the appellation’s jewels for producing wines with particular suppleness and depth.

This wine’s refined structure and aromatic complexity make it a brilliant companion for classic pairings such as duck with a cherry sauce, roast lamb with herbs or veal stew. Local Burgundy recipes such as boeuf bourguignon or coq au vin are perfect, echoing the earthy tones and delicate texture. The wine’s lively acidity and evolved tannins are also excellent alongside wild mushroom risotto or mature cheeses like Époisses or Comté.

For optimal enjoyment, decant gently to allow the bouquet to unfold and serve at 16-17°C. This mature Pinot Noir will reveal a beautiful interplay of red and black fruits, subtle spice, underbrush and an enduring mineral finish, offering a testament to the timeless appeal of Beaune’s Premier Cru terroirs.
