Viniou Reviews

Geantet-Pansiot's Hautes Côtes de Nuits 2023 is a classic Burgundian red made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, as is traditional for the region. The 2023 vintage benefited from a relatively cool and balanced growing season, with careful vineyard management ensuring optimal ripening of the thin-skinned Pinot Noir berries. Vinification at Geantet-Pansiot tends to emphasise finesse, with gentle extraction and the use of French oak barrels, delivering a wine that balances purity of fruit with elegance and subtle complexity. Expect a youthful, vibrant profile in its early years, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, underpinned by subtle hints of violets, forest floor and a touch of spice.

The Hautes Côtes de Nuits appellation lies to the west of the renowned Côte de Nuits, set on higher altitude slopes which provide slightly cooler conditions. The soils here are predominantly limestone mixed with clay, lending energy and finesse to the wines while maintaining the signature minerality of Burgundy. The region itself has a rich viticultural heritage, producing lively and accessible Pinots that often show a beautiful interplay of delicacy and freshness. While perhaps less known than wines from the more celebrated villages below, the Hautes Côtes have carved out a notable reputation in recent years for their excellent value and expressive style.

Given its fresh, medium-bodied profile and lively acidity, this wine pairs exceptionally well with a range of dishes. For a regional experience, consider pairing it with a classic coq au vin, roast chicken with mushrooms, or charcuterie such as jambon persillé. The wine's gentle tannins and vivid fruit also complement both duck breast, game birds, and lighter vegetarian fare like wild mushroom risotto or a cheese souffle.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine slightly cool, ideally at 14–16°C. Allow a short aeration to help the aromatic complexity unfold. While approachable now in its youth for its fruit-forward charm, a year or two of cellaring will see further development of its earthy, nuanced Burgundian character.
