Viniou Reviews

Domaine Moine-Hudelot’s Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 1987 is a remarkable expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most hallowed vineyards. The 1987 vintage, though marked by a challenging growing season, produced wines of remarkable delicacy and charm in the hands of experienced vignerons. Expect an alluring bouquet of dried cherries, wild strawberries, forest floor, truffle and subtle tobacco, underpinned by mature tertiary notes such as leather and sous-bois. The palate, now softened by age, reveals a silky texture, lingering minerality and a remarkable persistence. Domaine Moine-Hudelot’s traditional vinification and sensitive élevage allow the vineyard’s true character to emerge, yielding a wine both elegant and complex, with a faded but noble power.

Located in the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Vougeot is perhaps the most iconic Grand Cru of Burgundy. This famed clos, enclosed by walls since the 14th century, covers around 50 hectares shared by many growers, each imparting their own style. The terroir is a unique mosaic of clay-limestone soils, moving from deep and rich below the château to rockier, well-drained plots uphill. The region’s cool continental climate, with marked variations from year to year, contributes to the subtlety and ageing potential of its Pinot Noirs. Historically, Clos de Vougeot has been a symbol of Burgundy’s viticultural heritage, associated with finesse and longevity.

For food pairing, the serene maturity of this Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru calls for refined, understated dishes. Traditional options from Burgundy, such as roast duck with cherries, coq au vin, or a simple but elegant boeuf bourguignon, will enhance the nuanced flavours of the wine. Soft cheeses such as Époisses or Brillat-Savarin can also provide a luxurious counterpoint.

Serve the wine slightly below room temperature, at 15-17°C. Decanting is suggested, but handle with care given its age—thirty minutes should suffice to awaken the aromas. Enjoy in a large Burgundy glass to fully appreciate its bouquet and fine palate.
