Viniou Reviews

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2010 from Maison Saint-Nicolas is a superb expression of one of Burgundy’s most iconic vineyards. Crafted exclusively from Pinot Noir, this wine boasts the elegance and complexity emblematic of its esteemed appellation. The 2010 vintage, marked by a cool growing season and slow ripening, delivers pronounced aromatic intensity, refined tannins, and impeccable balance. Ageing often occurs in French oak barrels, imparting subtle spice and enriching the bouquet with nuances of cherry, blackcurrant, damp earth, violets, and a hint of truffle. The terroir of Clos de Vougeot is celebrated for its fine clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the wine's remarkable structure and capacity for long-term evolution.

The Côte de Nuits, in northern Burgundy, is renowned as the beating heart of Pinot Noir worldwide. Its fragmented patchwork of vineyards reflects centuries of vinicultural history, with monks from the Cistercian Abbey of Cîteaux founding Clos de Vougeot in the 12th century. The region’s continental climate brings cool winters and warm, dry summers, creating conditions for slow, measured ripening and aromatic concentration. The soils range from gravel and marl to more clay-rich parcels in lower sections, giving Clos de Vougeot its blend of power and finesse.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a gastronomic wine, thriving alongside refined cuisine. Classic pairings include roast duck with cherries, pigeon en croûte, or a rich beef Wellington. Burgundy’s own coq au vin or a mushroom risotto amplify its savoury depth, while mature cheeses like Époisses or Comté allow the wine’s earthiness to shine. For vegetarians, wild mushroom tart or lentil stew will do justice to its subtlety and complexity.

To fully appreciate its nuances, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving. Present it at 16-17°C, allowing the bouquet to unfurl and the palate to reveal the silken tannins and delicate layers that characterise a Grand Cru Pinot Noir at maturity.
