Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini’s Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Les Millandes" 2020 is an exceptional expression of Burgundy’s fabled Côte de Nuits. This wine originates from a Premier Cru plot within Morey-Saint-Denis, renowned for its mosaic of fine vineyard sites. The grape variety here is, as tradition dictates, Pinot Noir—a grape that truly thrives in this northern Burgundian terroir. In 2020, a relatively warm vintage, the grapes achieved excellent ripeness while retaining the vivacious acidity typical of the region. Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is known for attentive, sustainable viticulture and restrained use of new oak, allowing the vineyard and vintage to shine through with purity and finesse. Fermentation is conducted with partial whole cluster inclusion, lending the wine extra aromatic lift and a silken tannic structure.
The Côte de Nuits is widely celebrated as the epicentre of some of Burgundy’s most illustrious red wines. Characterised by a continental climate, the region benefits from cold winters and warm summers, encouraging slow, even ripening. The soils in Morey-Saint-Denis, composed mainly of limestone and marl, offer seamless drainage and encourage the Pinot Noir vines to dig deep, resulting in wines of minerality, tension and subtle earthiness. The village itself is nestled between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, sharing characteristics with its revered neighbours—at once structured and delicate, powerful yet poised.
This wine’s refined aromas of black cherries, dried rose petals and subtle spice make it an excellent match for roasted duck breast, pigeon or a classic boeuf bourguignon. For a regional touch, pair with coq au vin or a mushroom fricassée enriched with local cream. Its silky tannins and savoury length mean it also complements soft-ripened cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or Délice de Pommard.
To fully appreciate the nuance and elegance of this Premier Cru, decant for about an hour before serving. Enjoy it at 15-16°C to highlight its aromatics, finesse, and vibrant fruit, which are hallmarks of both the terroir and this outstanding vintage.
