Viniou Reviews

Château Pressac 2020, Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC, is a prime example of Right Bank Bordeaux sophistication. The wine, typical of the region, is a blend dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and smaller proportions of other permitted grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec or Petit Verdot. The 2020 vintage benefitted from a season marked by warm temperatures and well-timed rainfall, which led to grapes of excellent maturity and concentration. Château Pressac’s vinification generally involves careful manual selection, gentle extraction during fermentation and a thoughtful maturation in French oak barrels, resulting in a wine that is both expressive and structured, with firm tannins and a refined aromatic profile.

Saint-Émilion is situated on the right bank of the Dordogne river and is renowned for its undulating landscape of limestone plateaux, clay-limestone slopes and sandy lower terraces. The region enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, shaped by the proximity to the Atlantic, which supports the optimal ripening of Merlot and associated varieties. The soils, particularly conducive to viticulture, nurture deep-rooted vines and create wines of remarkable freshness, depth and finesse. Historically, Saint-Émilion combines monastic traditions with centuries of winemaking excellence, being recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For an ideal food pairing, the dense yet elegant structure of Château Pressac 2020 makes it a perfect match for classic Bordeaux dishes such as entrecôte à la bordelaise, lamb shoulder with rosemary or magret de canard. Its supple tannins work beautifully with earthy mushroom recipes, truffled risotto or a selection of aged cheeses like Comté or Saint-Nectaire.

When serving, allow the wine to breathe for an hour or two to reveal its aromatic complexity, showing ripe blackberries, plum, subtle spice and a touch of graphite. The perfect tasting temperature is 16-18°C: this range ensures the tannins remain smooth and the fruit and oak-derived nuances are at their most harmonious.
