Petrus 2012 is an exceptional red wine from the renowned Pomerol appellation, located on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Composed almost exclusively of Merlot, this celebrated vintage benefits from the region’s unique terroir – a distinctive mix of clay and iron-rich subsoils that bestow remarkable power and complexity to the wine. The 2012 vintage is marked by a cool spring and a warm, dry late summer, encouraging phenolic maturity and concentration. Vinification at Petrus is meticulous, involving hand harvesting and gentle extraction to preserve the purity and silkiness of the Merlot grape. Matured in new French oak barrels, the wine gains a harmoniously integrated structure and subtle spice notes.
Pomerol, though smaller and less classified than other Bordeaux regions, is globally acclaimed for its plush, opulent wines, with Petrus at its zenith. The vineyard’s relatively high proportion of blue clay soils is rare and provides perfect conditions for Merlot, facilitating both water retention and temperature regulation. The region enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, with sufficient warmth and rainfall to coax full ripeness from the grapes. Despite its lack of official classification, Pomerol’s long history and dedication to excellence have cemented its reputation among the world’s finest wine-producing areas.
A wine of Petrus’s calibre calls for refined and subtly flavoured dishes that complement its depth. Lamb, particularly slow-roasted rack or saddle with thyme, is an excellent match, as is beef fillet in mushroom sauce. Duck breast with a wine reduction or a classic French dish like tournedos Rossini will also highlight the wine’s lush texture and rich fruit character. Regionally, a confit de canard or truffled potato dish can mirror the earthy nuances and silkiness of the Merlot.
For optimal enjoyment, serve Petrus 2012 at around 17–18°C. Decant gently for one to two hours before serving, allowing the complex aromas of ripe black cherry, dark plum, cedar, and cocoa to unfurl alongside its velvety tannins and lingering, harmonious finish.
