Viniou Reviews

Jean-Paul Bartier’s “Cuvée La Madone Reine de l'Arénite” 2022 from the Fleurie AOC is an exemplary expression of Gamay, the sole grape variety of the appellation. This particular cuvée, originating from parcels around the famed La Madone hill, draws its unique personality from the pink granite soils rich in arénite, a sandstone that imparts both finesse and minerality to the wine. The 2022 vintage benefited from a classic Beaujolais season, with sufficient warmth and sunshine to create generous fruit expression, while careful vinification using semi-carbonic maceration preserves radiant freshness and highlights the grape’s floral succulence.

Fleurie is widely regarded as one of the most ‘feminine’ crus of the Beaujolais, cherished for its elegance and aromatic charm. The region lives up to its name, with delicate floral notes predominating in most vintages. The climate is semi-continental, moderate by southern Burgundy standards, allowing for balanced ripening while maintaining vibrancy. The soils here—particularly the arénite-based granite—encourage deep-rooting vines and result in wines of pronounced perfume and refined texture. The history of winemaking in Fleurie is rich, dating back to Roman times, and continues today with a blend of tradition and innovation.

A wine of such grace pairs beautifully with dishes that enhance its delicate structure. Regionally, it’s superb with a classic poulet de Bresse rôti, where the juicy chicken underscores the wine's subtle red cherry and violet notes. Roast duck breast or quail also make fine partners, especially if accompanied by a compote of red berries. For vegetarian options, consider wild mushroom tart or lentils du Puy with a sprinkle of fresh herbs. Soft cheeses such as Saint-Marcellin or Reblochon further highlight Fleurie’s soft tannins and supple fruit.

For the best tasting experience, serve this Fleurie slightly chilled, ideally between 13-15°C. Decanting is optional but opening the bottle half an hour before serving will allow the bouquet to unfurl. The wine is drinking beautifully in its youth but will develop more complexity over the next three to five years.
