Marc Koeberlé-Bléger’s Cuvée Saint Hippolyte Rouge 2021 is a beautiful example of Alsace’s growing reputation for red wines. This cuvée, from a region more traditionally known for its whites, often features a blend primarily led by Pinot Noir – the only red grape permitted under the Alsace AOC. The 2021 vintage experienced a relatively cool and balanced growing season, resulting in elegant freshness and moderate alcohol. The terroir around Saint Hippolyte, situated at the foot of the Vosges mountains, is characterised by clay-limestone soils which help the vines retain freshness and express delicate red fruit aromas. Vinification in the region typically favours gentle extraction and careful maturation in stainless steel or old oak barrels, aiming to preserve purity and finesse in the wine.
Alsace, in north-eastern France, enjoys a unique climate influenced by the rain-shadow of the Vosges, which blocks much of the Atlantic precipitation and provides the region with some of the driest vineyard conditions in France. This, combined with a complex mosaic of soil types, gives wines from Alsace a remarkable clarity and expression. Historically, Alsace has oscillated between French and German control, resulting in a fascinating mix of cultural and winemaking influences, although Pinot Noir is very much in the French style here: fresh, precise and understated.
Pairing this Cuvée Saint Hippolyte Rouge, think of dishes that complement its lively red fruit profile, gentle tannins and refreshing acidity. Grilled poultry such as duck breast with a berry sauce, or roast guinea fowl, work wonderfully. Its subtlety makes it a good match for Alsatian specialities like tarte flambée with bacon and onions or pork filet in mustard. Try also with lighter cheeses such as Tomme d’Alsace or Comté.
For optimal enjoyment, pour the wine at 14-16°C. At this temperature, its delicate aromatics and silky texture are best revealed. Decanting for half an hour can help open up those subtle earthy and spicy notes, making for an elegant tasting experience.
