Viniou - wine cellar management made simple
Château La Grande Gardiole’s Cuvée la Grange, representing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, is a classic southern Rhône red blend. While this bottling is non-vintage, it maintains the regional tradition of combining Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and sometimes smaller portions of Cinsault and other local varieties. The blend is crafted for balance and typicity: expect an expressive bouquet of ripe blackberries, dried herbs, garrigue, and subtle notes of spice and liquorice. The palate is full-bodied, yet approachable, showing soft tannins, ample fruit, and a lingering, warm finish. Oak ageing is often used judiciously in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, so some hints of vanilla or toasty notes may frame the wine’s fruit and herbal character.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape sits at the heart of the southern Rhône Valley, an area famed for its warm, Mediterranean climate, with plentiful sunshine aiding full ripening and concentration in the grapes. The iconic rounded galets roulés—large quartzite pebbles—cover much of the soil, storing heat during the day and radiating it back to the vines at night, while the underlying clay helps retain much-needed moisture. The mistral wind provides a cooling influence, helping to maintain healthy vines and clear skies. Viticulture here traces back centuries—papal history, a patchwork of noble houses, and the preservation of unique local varieties have all shaped the distinct and revered style of the region’s wines.
Cuvée la Grange’s robust structure and complex aromatics are perfectly at home alongside hearty, flavourful cuisine. Favourites from the region include daube provençale (a slow-cooked beef stew with herbs, olives, and sometimes orange), roast lamb with rosemary, or cassoulet. The wine’s depth and spice also complement game birds, grilled duck breast, or vegetable dishes with black olives and herbes de Provence. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Manchego make for an excellent pairing as well.
For serving, decant this wine an hour before drinking to allow its bouquet to open fully. The ideal tasting temperature is 16-18°C, which will lift the aromatics and ensure the palate retains its freshness and balance.
