Viniou Reviews

The 2018 Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne Saint-Joseph from the Northern Rhône Valley is a remarkable red wine. Made entirely from Syrah grapes, this wine is a true expression of its terroir. The vineyards are situated on steep slopes overlooking the Rhône River, characterised by granitic soils which impart a distinctive minerality to the wine. In the winery, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and then aged in oak barrels, bringing out its depth and complexity.

The Northern Rhône region, renowned for its Syrah-based reds, enjoys a continental climate with warm summers and cooler winters. The influence of the river helps moderate temperatures, allowing for the gradual ripening of the grapes. Saint-Joseph AOC, one of the region's notable appellations, has a history dating back to Roman times, and has long been celebrated for producing elegant and peppery wines with firm tannins and vibrant acidity.

When thinking about food pairings, the Saint-Joseph 2018’s bold flavours and aromatic profile make it an excellent companion for a variety of dishes. Traditional French cuisine such as coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon will harmonise beautifully with the wine's savoury elements. Additionally, a roasted leg of lamb or a hearty ratatouille can highlight its fruity and earthy undertones. For something more casual, consider a selection of charcuterie or aged cheeses to complement its rich flavour profile.

For optimal enjoyment, it's advisable to serve this Saint-Joseph at a temperature of 16-18°C. Allow the wine to breathe for about an hour before serving, as this will help to open up its complex aromatic bouquet. Savour each sip, letting the aromas and flavours unfold in the glass, for a truly satisfying experience.
