Viniou Reviews

Les Clapes Blanc, produced in the Luberon appellation of the southern Rhône Valley, is a dry white wine that expresses all the freshness and charm typical of its terroir. Although this particular bottle is non-vintage, it most likely consists of a blend of traditional southern Rhône white grape varieties, such as Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, or possibly Roussanne and Vermentino. These grapes are generally known for yielding crisp, aromatic whites with a subtle mineral backbone and a pleasant balance of fruit and acidity. Vinification typically involves careful pressing and fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the natural vibrancy and purity of the fruit.

The Luberon is a stunning region in the south-eastern corner of the Rhône, bordered by the picturesque mountains of the same name. Protected as a national park, the area enjoys abundant sunshine, warm Mediterranean influences, and cool nights due to the elevation — factors which favour both ripeness and aromatic complexity in white grapes. The soils here are a patchwork of limestone, clay, and sandy loam, imparting finesse and a touch of minerality to the wines. While the Rhône Valley boasts a long and storied heritage as one of France's pre-eminent wine regions, Luberon itself has emerged more recently as a source for fresh, modern whites that are increasingly garnering attention for their quality and value.

This style of Luberon Blanc marries wonderfully with both Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and classic French fare. Serve it alongside grilled fish infused with herbs de Provence, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or a lush goat's cheese tart. Local Provençal ratatouille, sea bream, or simply prepared shellfish also make superb companions, as do crunchy summer salads dressed in olive oil.

For optimal enjoyment, chill your bottle to about 8-10°C. At this temperature, the wine's aromatic delicacy and freshness will be most expressive, while its underlying structure and nuance remain intact. This makes it ideal for a leisurely summer lunch or as an elegant aperitif under the sun.
