Viniou Reviews

Château Montfaucon 2015 from Lirac AOC in the southern Rhône Valley is an exemplary red wine, predominantly crafted from traditional Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and possibly Cinsault and Carignan. The 2015 vintage benefitted from a hot, dry growing season, resulting in concentrated fruit and supple tannins. These grapes are typically harvested by hand, with vinification aimed at preserving the ripe fruit character and structure, often through careful temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in both tank and oak to balance freshness and complexity. The wine presents a deep garnet hue, with aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, leather, and subtle garrigue, underpinned by notes of spice and a touch of earthiness, characteristic of the terroir.

Lirac is situated on the right bank of the Rhône, opposite the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its vineyards benefit from the region’s Mediterranean climate, marked by hot summers and the cooling influence of the mistral wind, which helps maintain the health and vibrancy of the vines. The soils here are composed of rolled pebbles (galets roulés), clay, and sandy plains, contributing to both the intensity and finesse of the wines. Lirac’s rich winemaking history stretches back to Roman times, and today it is celebrated for producing robust, distinctive reds that combine power with elegance.

This Lirac rouge pairs beautifully with rustic Provençal cuisine. Consider grilled lamb with rosemary, slow-cooked beef daube, or game dishes such as venison or pheasant, where the wine’s structure and depth can hold up to bold flavours. It also complements Mediterranean-styled vegetable tian, wild mushroom risotto, or mature cheeses like Tomme de Savoie and aged Comté.

To enjoy Château Montfaucon 2015 at its best, decant it for at least an hour to allow the aromatics to fully develop. Serve at 16-18°C to highlight both the wine’s lush fruit core and its savoury, spicy nuances. This wine is drinking beautifully now but can also be cellared for several more years to gain further complexity.
