Viniou Reviews

Château Lamagdelaine Noire 2021 hails from the picturesque Cahors AOC in the South-West of France, nestled at the foothills of the Massif Central. This red wine is predominantly crafted from Malbec, locally referred to as "Côt"—the emblematic grape of Cahors, often blended with small proportions of Merlot or Tannat to add suppleness or structure. The 2021 vintage presents a youthful yet promising expression, likely marked by fresh dark fruit aromas—black cherry, plum, and blackberry—underpinned by subtle hints of violets and spice. Tannins tend to be assertive but well-integrated, especially as the wine opens up, with a vibrant acidity that provides lift and length. Vinification here typically balances tradition with a modern touch; grapes are hand-harvested, and careful extraction in the winery ensures both depth of fruit and freshness.

The Cahors region, rooted in viticultural history since Roman times, benefits from a continental climate tempered by Atlantic influences. Hot summers and cool nights foster slow, even ripening, which enhances flavour concentration as well as natural acidity. The terroir is defined by limestone plateaux—known as "causses"—and terraced gravelly soils along the Lot River, providing excellent drainage and encouraging vine resilience. These soils, paired with the fluctuation in daytime and nighttime temperatures, are essential to the distinctive structure and longevity that Cahors wines are celebrated for.

In terms of food pairings, this Malbec-driven red shows beautifully alongside hearty French dishes, particularly those from the Southwest. Consider duck confit, cassoulet, or a rich, slow-cooked beef daube, all of which harmonise with the wine’s robust frame and earthy undertones. Regional cheeses—such as Rocamadour or a mature Cantal—also provide an authentic match, complementing both the fruit and the tannic spine.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet and texture to fully evolve. Serve at 16-18°C—cool enough to emphasise freshness and fragrance, but warm enough to soften the tannins and reveal its complexity. This 2021 Cahors will continue to age gracefully over the coming years yet already offers delightful typicity and regional character.
