Matuško Dingač 2018 hails from the renowned Dingač appellation on the steep, sun-drenched slopes of the Pelješac Peninsula in southern Dalmatia, Croatia. This region is notably celebrated for producing powerful and characterful red wines, often using the indigenous Plavac Mali grape, though specific blend details are not always disclosed. The wine’s deep ruby hue suggests a full-bodied style, typically showcasing intense notes of dark fruits such as black cherry and plum, alongside hints of dried Mediterranean herbs and a distinct mineral backbone, derived from the rocky, limestone-rich soils. Vinification in this area often reflects a careful balance between tradition and innovation, with some wines matured in both large Slavonian oak casks and smaller barriques, bringing nuanced spice and supple tannins.
The Dingač area benefits from a unique microclimate, with southern exposure, ample sunshine hours, and cooling breezes off the Adriatic Sea. These factors, combined with the stony, terraced vineyards, contribute to both richness and freshness in the finished wines. Dalmatia’s winemaking heritage stretches back thousands of years, and Dingač itself was the first protected wine region in Croatia, recognised for its outstanding quality and distinctive typicity.
With its robust structure and layered flavours, this wine pairs beautifully with dishes that celebrate the hearty Dalmatian culinary tradition. Daube-style beef stews, slow-cooked lamb with Mediterranean herbs, or grilled octopus with olive oil all make excellent partners. Rich vegetable dishes like stuffed aubergines or a classic peka are also fitting. Aged hard cheeses such as Pag cheese highlight the wine’s complexity.
For optimum enjoyment, decant the wine to allow it to open up, and serve at 16-18°C. This temperature best reveals the depth, aromatic complexity, and velvety tannins typical of top Dingač reds. The 2018 vintage has a promising future for further cellaring, but it is drinking beautifully with some aeration today.
